The Royal Oak Hotel is often praised for its amazing location, ideal for exploring nearby walks like Buttermere and Fleetwith Pike, both just a short drive away. Guests consistently enjoy the exceptional food, especially the dinner menu featuring locally and seasonally sourced dishes, and the complimentary hot drinks, including proper coffee from a bean-to-cup machine. Some guests have occasionally found the portion sizes in the restaurant to be on the smaller side. The hotel also offers comfortable and spacious rooms, some with large bathrooms and powerful showers, and practical amenities such as a drying room for walking gear and even an EV charger in the car park.

a cute stay

ideal locationavailable busfriendly staffdairy-free options
the location suited lots of walking and it was just a short journey to keswick. a bus stop was available just outside the hotel. staff members showed that they cared by asking about my day, my travel, and my plans. i found many dairy-free options at breakfast. the snug area was suitable for meeting people and discussing local walks.
i did note the absence of coffee that was freshly ground , served in a cafetière.
Dining

a true lakes gem

comfortable bedlovely viewwide rangegreat selection
I found the room spacious and tastefully decorated. the bed was very comfortable, and the view was lovely. the three-course evening menu was superb, and the hotel offered a great wine selection. breakfast was spot on, with a wide range of choices. Gluten-free and vegan options were catered for well.
the road to the hotel was a single track! i found it slightly nerve-wracking at times. it did not detract from the stay overall though.
Service
10/10

the staff impressed me. rezina was especially kind and helpful during breakfast. the location is also very convenient, close to nature.
the coffee quality disappointed me. it seemed like a machine-made beverage, not freshly ground. i also noticed the drying room served as storage.

AN okay, but underwhelming stay

great breakfastuncomfortable bedflat pillows
the breakfast was great , but the coffee was cold.
I was disappointed by the lack of a tv in the room. i expected it to have some entertainment in the evening, especially after a day of hiking. the bed was also quite uncomfortable . I found it difficult to get a good night's sleep. the pillows were flat and offered little support.
