Unique Castle Rooms
Barcaldine Castle features six guest rooms, each with a king-size bed. Rooms offer views of Loch Creran or the surrounding countryside. The Airds Room can be arranged with twin beds or a super king-size double, including an ensuite toilet, a walk-in shower, and a turreted dressing area. The Argyll Room includes French antique furniture and views of the garden, Lochan Dubh, and Scots pines. The Barcaldine Room offers a four-poster bed, views of the garden, a roll-top bath, a shower, and a secret stairway. The Breadalbane Room, the largest, includes a super-king-size four-poster bed and a view of Loch Creran and the Appin Hills. The Caithness Room offers views of Loch Creran and Glencoe. The Lochnell Room features exposed stonework, a Portland Stone Fireplace, a Jacobean four-poster double bed, a carved writing desk, and a mirror inside the southeast castle turret.
Breakfast and Dining
Breakfast is served from 7:45 AM to 9:30 AM and includes a full Scottish breakfast with bacon, local pork sausage, Benderloch venison Lorne sausage, Macsweens haggis, mushrooms, tomato, and baked beans. A vegetarian/vegan option features Macsween veggie haggis, bubble and squeak cake, mushrooms, tomato, and beans. Omelets are available plain, with cheese, or with mushrooms. Guests can bring cold picnics to eat on the patio or by the fire. Exclusive use guests can book a local chef. Self-catering guests have kitchen access during winter, and in summer by arrangement.
Activities and Amenities
Barcaldine Castle provides free bikes, a shared lounge, a garden, and a terrace. The Great Hall and Laird's Parlour offer open fires. Guests also receive a mini hospitality hamper, a bathrobe, slippers, a hairdryer, and toiletries. TV, film, and photography packages are available November-March, including breakfast, exclusive room use, and grounds access. Wi-Fi can be patchy; Vodafone and O2 provide an excellent 4G signal.
Location and Access
Located on the banks of Loch Creran, Barcaldine Castle is 9 miles north of Oban, off the A828 Oban to Fort William road. From Benderloch, take the road to Tralee, South Shian, Eriska, and Barcaldine Castle. Glasgow Airport is a 2-hour drive. Nearby landmarks include The Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary (3.5 km), Castle Stalker (7 km), Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel (6.5 km), and Beinn Lora (3 km).
Services and Facilities
The Barcaldine Castle team promptly answers queries from 8 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week. The castle can host weddings and events, offering the Great Hall for ceremonies. Exclusive use hires include six bedrooms, breakfast from April to October, and daily room service. The castle can recommend florists, hairdressers, and photographers. It supplies glasses, chilling facilities, and ice for the bar. Two small dogs are allowed by arrangement from November to March only.
