Hathersage is surrounded by open moorland and gritstone edges such as Stanage Edge, and limestone crags at Stoney Middleton, Cheedale, Cheetor, and Ravens Dale. There are also tors, such as Higgar Tor, and the hill fort at Carl Wark, which lies between Stanage and Burbage Edges and close to Higgar Tor. The village center has climbing/walking outlets, cafes, local shops, ATMs, an Indian restaurant, and an open-air swimming pool (Apr - Oct). Near the pool and bowling green, there is a recreational area. Mayfield Alpacas, the theme park at Matlock Bath (Gulliver's Kingdom), Haddon Hall (dating from the 12th Century), and Chatsworth House are also nearby. The Derwent Valley Museum (The Dambuster Museum) is Located in the West Tower of the Derwent Dam. The 617 Squadron Dambusters Memorial is located just inside the gatehouse to the Western Tower of The Derwent Dam.

The road to Sheffield branches off the route which follows the River Derwent downstream at a road junction above the river in the village. Manchester is 50 km away.
