Location

The Vale Hotel is located in the historical Saxon Highstreet of Cricklade, recognized as the southern gateway to the Cotswolds. The hotel serves as an excellent base for exploring the Cotswold Water Park, which comprises 140 lakes suitable for various recreational activities. The Thames Path National Trail runs through the town, providing routes for walking enthusiasts.

The hotel resides in a grade II listed building, rich in history with ties to Cricklade's past as the home of a royal mint from 979 to 1100. Guests can explore notable landmarks such as the 13th century St Sampson's Church and the medieval St Mary's Church through the Heritage Trail. The town museum showcases artifacts including examples of Cricklade coins from the Domesday Book.

Dining Experience

On-site dining is available at Jambo Grill, which offers a variety of traditional and Kenyan dishes curated by Executive Chef Lloyd Mbaka. The hotel serves a traditional Sunday Roast with Yorkshire pudding and various trimmings each Sunday. The restaurant is open daily, catering to those looking for snacks or full meals.

Outdoor Activities

Cricklade offers access to various nature reserves, including North Meadow National Nature Reserve, known for the largest population of wild Snakeshead Fritillaries in the UK. Nearby, Blakehill Nature Reserve spans 600 acres of grassland, providing ample opportunities for nature enthusiasts. Dance Common offers an expansive 2.32 hectares managed by local volunteers.

Highlights

Location: Southern Gateway to the Cotswolds

Dining: Jambo Grill with Kenyan dishes

Heritage: Grade II listed building

Activities: Thames Path National trail access

“In my opinion, this Grade II listed building offers a distinctive adults-only experience within a historic Saxon town. The engaging bar and culturally rich menu-influenced by African, British, and Indian cuisines-stand out. I appreciate the hotel's provisions for cyclists, making it a solid choice for active travellers.”

Decent Stay Overall

amazing food wonderful staff flashing light large wardrobe
The restaurant was wonderful. The food was amazing. The staff were wonderful. The ambiance is fantastic.
The bathroom light was on a sensor. The sensor was not working. We had a flashing light for a while so we had to shut the door. The large wardrobe felt unnecessary in the small room.

Satisfactory Experience

friendly owner great guinness leaky tap lukewarm shower
The owner was very friendly and helpful. He poured a great Guinness. The restaurant downstairs had a special on, so I sampled the goat and the venison curry. It was the best I've ever had.
The tap in the bathroom leaked. The shower was only lukewarm and the cubicle was tiny. The price felt too high considering the limited amenities. There were no biscuits, limited milk and tea bags, and no shower gel, shampoo, or conditioner.

faulty sensor bulky wardrobe
the bathroom light flickered like a strobe light due to a faulty sensor, forcing me to shower either in the dark or with that irritating flashing. it was not comfortable, and fixing it should've been a priority. also, the room felt cramped with that bulky wardrobe. a simple coat rack and a bench for the luggage would have worked better, as i had to climb over the bed to get around my bags.

Superior Room Experience

fast check in superior room tasty curries great salad
Mark managed my check in very fast. I discovered an upgrade to a superior room, a great surprise. We enjoyed the cauliflower fritters and shared goat with fish curries. Those curries were very tasty, among the best. The kachumbari salad was great too.
The bathroom light involved a sensor. This sensor did not work well, so it flashed.
