The dishes include vegan, vegetarian, gluten, and lactose-free options. Guests can sample recipes from the island's cookbook, KITAMU. The park has also developed a 'Sustainable Seafood Guide' for Zanzibar hoteliers to promote sustainable sourcing. A selection of locally inspired cocktails, wines, beers, and other drinks are available at an extra cost.
Activities and Conservation
Chumbe Island Coral Park's activities include snorkeling in the Coral Reef Sanctuary, forest walks, Coconut Crab Walks, and Intertidal Walks. The Coral Reef Sanctuary serves as a breeding ground for fish and corals, aiding in the recolonization of nearby areas. The Forest Reserve hosts diverse plant and animal species, including the Ader's duiker and coconut crabs. Guests can climb the lighthouse for views or relax on the private beach. A book exchange, games, drawing materials, and wildlife guides are available at the Education Center. Snorkeling tours are guided, following UNEP/Green Fins code of conduct. The island has an array of secluded beach huts, sun loungers and swinging beds for you to relax and enjoy at leisure.
Location and Access
Chumbe Island Coral Park is located 5 km from Kisauni, 8 km west of Unguja in Zanzibar. Boat transport to and from the island departs from Mbweni Ruins & Gardens (former Jungle Paradise Hotel) at 9:30 am for a 10:00 am departure. A taxi transfer from Zanzibar Airport or Stone Town to Jungle Paradise Resort is available for US$15. The park includes a Coral Reef Sanctuary and a Forest Reserve.
Services and Sustainability
Chumbe Island Coral Park supports conservation and environmental education through ecotourism revenue. The park includes rainwater catchment, grey water filtration, composting toilets, solar water heating, and photovoltaic power generation. Chumbe uses biodegradable soap from a local women's cooperative and provides natural mosquito repellent. The park restricts visitor numbers and avoids non-biodegradable products, transporting goods in locally made baskets. Chumbe Island is a single-use plastic-free island and promotes sustainable tourism under the 'Greener Zanzibar Initiative'. Chumbe Island Coral Park team members include an Island Manager, Assistant Island Manager, House Keeper, Assistant Head Chef, Waiter, Guest Cook, and Guiding Rangers.
