“There's a distinctive appeal to a canalside hotel that's been family-run for decades, especially one defined by its thatched-roof architecture. The on-site bowling green and cricket ground offer a charming touch, while the varied dining-including authentic Italian-suits different tastes. It strikes me as a relaxing base, a bit removed from standard hotel experiences but near enough to attractions like the Lake District.”

Review summary

Guests often enjoy the spacious standard rooms and the lovely pub and restaurant. A popular choice is the steak and kidney pudding in the restaurant, which some feel is good enough to sell online. Many appreciate the hotel's proximity to the Lancaster Canal, making the beer garden a nice spot for enjoying a drink in the sunshine. While most find the rooms satisfactory, some have noted that they can be a bit basic or dated.

Quirky Stay Near the Canal

spacious accommodationfriendly staffupgraded roomnice drinks
The accommodation was very spacious. The staff were nice and friendly upon arrival. I was immediately moved to a new upgraded room when a plug socket blew. I also enjoyed drinks at the tavern.
The toilet facilities were quite basic. The room lacked shelves.

The room had a double bed. It included a small television and basic tea, coffee facilities. The bathroom contained complimentary toiletries and fresh towels. Some fixtures appear dated. but they are functional.

i stayed in a standard double room for 3 nights. the restaurant menu included large portion sizes. the welcome was great, even though i was held up in traffic jams.
The breakfast was poor. The poached eggs were more like hard boiled eggs.

The hotel features two dining locations, which I found convenient. The pub had a great selection of food, and the quality surprised me (especially the salmon salad). I appreciated the ample portions and freshness. The canalside location is lovely, offering a nice backdrop.
I noticed some signs of wear in the room. The kettle looked quite old. I also found some damp spots around the door and window. I feel that the rooms need some attention (perhaps a revamp).
