“Nestled in a picturesque Sussex village, this historic house impressed me with its blend of charm and modern updates. The AA Rosette-awarded dining and extensive gardens create a serene environment, though some service hiccups seem to be part of the recent reopening's growing pains. Overall, it seems like a delightful retreat with a few kinks to iron out.”

Wonderful Experience

warm welcomebeautiful viewexcellent serviceminibar restock
I highly recommend this place. I plan to return for a longer stay. The staff welcomed us warmly from the start and continued their excellent service. Dinner at the hotel was fantastic, (I especially loved the dessert). Our room was super clean and offered a beautiful view of the downs.
The minibar was not restocked daily. This was inconvenient. I think there should be more attention to this detail for a smooth experience. Otherwise, the hotel provides a great value for the price I paid. It is a nice place and I will probably come back soon.
Facilities
9/10
The hotel provides wellies for muddy walks. They are available for every guest. There is a cupboard with snacks at reception. The spa features a heated pool and relaxation area, which I found wonderful.
Rooms
10/10
The room featured a comfortable bed with top-quality bedding. It also included subtle touches, such as homemade shortbread hanging on the door. A handwritten welcome note and a bottle of madeira were included.
Location
9/10
The hotel provides views of the rolling South Downs hills. Many interesting shops are located nearby. The hotel is close to nice countryside areas.
Service
10/10
The reception team welcomed us with wine and showed us personally to our room. Helen, who checked us in, was friendly and knowledgeable. All of the breakfast staff were also excellent and very friendly.

The pool was heated nicely. The staff arranged breakfast from the guest buffet. They were very cute. They also gave our dog breakfast and water. I also had a tour of the renovated hotel. It was fabulous. I loved the gardens. The gardener talked about the ongoing garden refurbishment.
The bathroom was small, and some finishes seemed cheap.

Mixed Feelings about My Recent Stay

outdoor poolsmall roomstale pastries
The outdoor pool area looked pretty nice though I didn't use it.
The room felt smaller than advertised. I nearly tripped over my suitcase every time I walked in. And the promised toiletries were missing. The breakfast buffet was okay. But the pastries tasted stale. the elevator was out of service for a day. I had to lug my luggage up two flights of stairs.
