Guided tours of the fort are available in Spanish. The lounge features a big-screen TV with Netflix and a DVD collection. Laundry service is available, using Speed Queen machines.
Location and Access
Tortugal is located between the Rio Dulce bridge and Castillo San Felipe, about one mile from Fronteras. Transportation is available from the municipal dock in Fronteras. Follow the road under the bridge to the docks for boats to Livingston. The lodge is about 85 km from Aeropuerto de Puerto Barrios. It is a walk through a hardwood and cacao plantation to Fronteras and Castillo San Felipe. Tijax Marina is nearby, with a swinging bridge and swimming hole.
Services Offered
Tortugal offers fiber-optic internet. Drinking water is filtered, chlorinated, and UV treated. The staff can assist with travel plans to Tikal, Guatemala City, or Semuc Champey. Guests can be picked up in Fronteras by boat. Free parking is available on the El Relleno side of the bridge at Doña Aracely's parking lot. Boat tours to Livingston and Finca Paraiso can be arranged.
“Tortugal Boutique River Lodge strikes me as a surprisingly comfortable base, given its remote setting on the Rio Dulce. I appreciate its dedication to simple pleasures: kayaks for exploring the river, home-cooked meals, and clean, safe water. It seems a good spot for couples or families who want an easygoing experience of the region.”
