Rooms at Ahilya Fort
Ahilya Fort has 19 rooms in six 18th-century buildings. The Princely Badam room is named for the Indian almond trees outside its western windows. It features a king-sized bed set amongst traditional carved wooden columns. The Hawa Bangla offers a floor-to-ceiling bay window overlooking the river and ghats, a queen-sized bed, and an ensuite bathroom. The Narmada Suite features a living room and a private terrace with river views. The Naqqara Regal Suite, located atop the Wada's eastern gate, includes a bedroom, ensuite bathroom, living room, and private balcony. Arjun's Regal Tent has a heated plunge pool, ensuite bathroom, and views of the Narmada River and Ahilyeshwar temple. Elaichi features two twin beds, ensuite bath, and ramp access. Martand Niwas has a queen-sized bed, living room, and a private balcony that overlooks the black bamboo and a 200-year-old neem tree in the Badam Chowk.
Dining Experience
Ahilya Fort offers a dining experience that resembles dining in Prince Richard Holkar's home. There is no restaurant, nor a menu. Prince Richard creates a fixed menu daily. Breakfast is served on the mandap sitout overlooking the Narmada River or in the garden cottage. Lunch consists of light western fare prepared with produce gathered from the organic house garden and farm. Guests are invited to the mandap for refreshments followed by a traditional thaali dinner with regional specialties and dishes with a Holkar twist. Guests can disembark at the Boleya Chhatri gated garden for a vegetarian dinner by candlelight.
Leisure and Activities
Ahilya Fort provides opportunities for recreation, with a large pool within a walled garden. Steps from the pool is the petanque court, where the game is played with 18th-century cannon balls. The massage treatment room is in the Lingaarchan area. Children can play with bunnies, ducks, and goats in the menagerie. Activities include a 45-minute walk through a typical village and its fields, as well as a boat ride to Baneshwar Temple. Guests can take a 2 1/2 hour float down the River on traditional paddle boats. A daily ritual dating from the time of Queen Ahilya Bai is performed by 11 Brahmins just below the breakfast Mandap. Guests can also visit the organic farm, a 10-minute drive from the hotel.
Location & Transportation
Ahilya Fort is located 85 km from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore. The hotel is near the bustling village markets and riverside complex of temples and cenotaphs. The town of Omkareshwar, featuring temples, is an 80-minute drive upriver from Maheshwar. The 15th-century fortified city of Mandu is a short drive away.
Hotel Services
Ahilya Fort offers rations to pilgrims doing a circumambulation of the Narmada on foot. The hotel gardens, designed and planted by Prince Richard, are spread throughout the property. The hotel provides candlelight dinners in the Garden of the Boleya Nobles. Guests are invited to the Ganesh temple located in the center of the Ahilya Fort Hotel. A daily Lingarchan Puja is performed. Massage services are available in the Lingarchan area.
