The hostel is close to the Cow Green Nature Reserve. Kingsway Adventure Centre, six miles away, offers guided tuition in outdoor activities. Walks are graded for exploration. The hostel has information and displays on the landscape, wildlife, and people of Upper Teesdale. There is a small garden with direct access to the surrounding countryside. It's worth watching the sun set over the Pennines.

It's in County Durham, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the Cow Green Nature Reserve, and 65 km from Durham Tees Valley. Nearby landmarks include High Force Waterfall (3 km), Winch Bridge (5 km), Moor House (2.5 km) and Low Force (5 km).
